Descente

Georg Baselitz's "Descente" series was presented in an exhibition at the Galerie Thaddaeus Ropac in Paris Pantin. The series is a collection of new works, including both paintings and works on paper, that continue the exploration of themes and stylistic elements that Baselitz has become renowned for. The "Descente" series is described as being stylistically and iconographically linked to Baselitz's earlier fragmented self-portraits known as the Avignon series, which was shown at the 2015 Venice Biennale.

The exhibition is notable for comprising five groups of works that maintain a conversation with Baselitz's ongoing interest in deconstruction and inversion, hallmarks of his unique artistic language. Through "Descente," Baselitz delves into notions of "late work" and "age," themes that have become increasingly prominent in his work as he reflects on his own legacy and the passage of time. These works are not just continuations of his artistic journey but also deeply personal reflections on the process of aging and the introspective gaze of the artist.

The series represents a significant addition to Baselitz's oeuvre, offering a new perspective on his consistent themes of inversion and fragmentation, all while engaging with the broader narrative of his life's work. "Descente" stands as a testament to Baselitz's enduring influence and his capacity to continually re-examine and reinvent his approach to art-making, even as he navigates the complexities of his own legacy within the contemporary art world.
